For children and teenagers, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death. By being attentive, informed and prepared, you can avoid the hazards that come with enjoying the water on a hot day.
The first water safety tip for kids is to be attentive. Adults should always be present when children are playing in the water. Although lifeguards are good, they have a lot of children to watch, so it is a good idea to accompany your child to the beach or swimming pool regardless of their age. It is also a good idea for children to have a buddy when they are swimming, so that they can watch after each other and make sure safe behavior is being used. Another great water safety tip for kids is to talk with children before swimming to educate them on unsafe behavior and what to do in case of an accident. Make sure they understand that running near the pool is unsafe due to slippery surfaces. Also, educate them on who and where the lifeguards are in case they need to get ones attention. It is also a good idea to inform children that rowdy pool games are not a good idea. With these bits of information, your child can be better equipped to handle and avoid water accidents. In addition to water accidents, there are other risks involved with swimming. An important water safety tip for kids is to be aware of the sun and heat and to drink plenty of fluids. On top of painful sunburns, the sun can also cause heat exhaustion. Children should always wear sunscreen and parents should keep an eye out for the symptoms of heat exhaustion which include paleness, cool/moist skin, sweating, headaches, nausea and an increased pulse rate.
