As you prepare to go shopping for your first pair of shoes for your baby, do you ever wonder what ever happened to the first pair of shoes that you ever wore? Wouldn’t your parents be thrilled to have them still, sitting on a mantle, perhaps bronzed? When a baby takes his or her first steps, their life beyond what you have to do for them truly begins. Their road begins here. Sometimes that can be a rough road, particularly with children. Even babies put a considerable amount of wear and tear on shoes. There is a lot of jumping and running, once they learn how, and more than a few stomps through every mud puddle within five feet. Preserving these shoes can be difficult. The best way to go about keeping your toddlers first pair of shoes in good condition is through the cleaning process. Most parents merely assume that throwing them in the washer and then into the dryer will get them clean and keep them in good shape. This will keep them clean, but each time you wash and dry a pair of shoes, it gradually degrades them a bit. The solution is a simple one, though it might take an extra five minutes out of your day. However, those five minutes will be well worth it when they are grown and you still have their first shoes as a memory. In actually washing the shoes, there are two methods. The first is a bit rougher on them, but will maintain the shoes longer than traditional washing methods. Use your washing machine, but use considerably less detergent than you normally would. Detergents are very harsh on shoes. The second method is that of hand washing. Of course, this requires a bit more time, but isn’t this future memory worth it? Use warm (not hot) water and soak the shoes. Then, with a light brush, scrub them well on the interior and exterior. You can use a slightly harder bristled brush on the soles. Then simply rinse them off. Always air-dry your baby’s shoes. The heat and the motion of a conventional dryer is simply too harsh on the glue and string that holds the shoes together. In twenty years, you can look at those tiny shoes sitting on the
mantle or shelf and remember when your son or daughter took their
first steps. A priceless memory indeed.
